Finders Keepers - Free Stationery in Melrose!

They say a picture paints a thousand words but how many images can your words conjure for the reader? As National Stationery Week (27 Apl - 3 May) approaches, why not find out? And to make it a little easier for some of you, every day during that week we will be giving away a pack of six of our own Borders notecards plus a ballpoint pen! They will be dotted around Melrose town centre for some lucky person to find. Read more about it at the end of this post.

“The proper definition of a man is an animal that writes letters.” ― Lewis Carroll

There's no doubt, even in the age of email, texts and tweets, that we all love to receive a handwritten letter, note or card. Knowing that someone has taken the time to sit down and write, just for you, is very special. And you can read and re-read it at leisure, taking in the sentiments, laughing at the jokes and maybe even shedding a tear. Words can do that!

always useful to have on hand as well as making a thoughtful gift.
“Every body allows that the talent of writing agreeable letters is peculiarly female.” ― Jane Austen, Northanger Abbey

The great thing is that writing is a two way process that can give as much pleasure to the writer as the reader; and what could be nicer than taking a crisp sheet of paper or choosing just the right card, which you know will be appreciated, to convey your news?

'This note's for you ...'
National Stationery Week gives us the ideal excuse to drop a line; to family, to friends - whether they live far away or just around the corner! It could be several pages long or a few lines on a postcard but it says 'you are in my thoughts' and that's a nice warm feeling to give. It's also a great opportunity to encourage children to write and begin the habit of a lifetime that can repay many times over in life skills development.

Borders notecards by Present Perfect, Melrose

And so, on to our giveaway! The image above shows the six designs of our Borders notecards. They feature the abbeys of Melrose, Jedburgh and Dryburgh along with Abbotsford (Sir Walter Scott's house), Scott's View and Mary, Queen of Scots' house in Jedburgh. Every pack contains one card of each design.

Every day from 27 April until 3 May we will leave one pack of six notecards and a ballpoint at an undisclosed location somewhere in Melrose town centre. It might be tied to railings or on a bench but each day the location will be different. We hope the lucky finders will enjoy using the cards to keep in touch with their friends and family or perhaps make a gift of them to someone they know who loves writing. And if finding a pack helps make their day a little brighter, we hope they'll let us know too. In fact, if they come to the shop (Tues. - Sat.) and tell us which pack they found and where, anytime until Saturday 9 May, we'll include their name in a prize draw for a £10 Present Perfect gift voucher. With a maximum of seven finders, the odds are good!

So, Happy Hunting and remember - keep in touch!

Could we tempt you with Chocolate?!

Hello and welcome to Spring!

Chocolate Eggs

We've reached that time of year again when our business anniversary is in sight, which means we'll be celebrating our 8th year of trading immediately after the Easter weekend! Your support makes all the difference, so we thank you and look forward to another year of finding and sharing with you all those gorgeous things that make perfect presents.

In the meantime, there's chocolate to be had so come on down!
Gift selection in Spring colours

As if to emphasise the arrival of Spring, as well as the brighter, sunnier weather (in between hail showers!!), lots of new stock has been arriving. We're decked out with all sorts of beautiful things from Parlane; colourful glass from new supplier, D&J Glassware; two new greetings card suppliers plus new offerings from old favourites like WoodWick candles.

Glass animal characters

These pieces are from new supplier, D&J Glassware. Handmade in Europe, the fused glass animals add colour and a little humour and would make ideal gifts for any lovers of nature or wildlife. We also have beautiful iridescent hearts in six colours but each has a pearlised finish which adds even more! Following similar lines, we have mouth blown reed diffuser globes complete with fragrance oil; far more attractive than any plain glass bottle!

Hearthwick candles by WoodWick

'Hearthwick' is the newest range from WoodWick candles: new elliptical shape, new 16oz size but always with the popular, crackling wooden wick. Of course, we still have the Classic, Reserve and Trilogy styles. WoodWick has also introduced a new, larger size in wax tablets for use in your wax melt burners. Come and take a look.

Melrose Sevens Rugby logo

The weekend after Easter sees the Melrose 7s rugby tournament take place. Melrose is always a hive of activity on this weekend and the TV coverage is a great advert for the town!

National Stationery Week begins on 27 April and this video of Benedict Cumberbatch reading a wartime letter shows why writing can say so much more than any email, text or tweet!

We've just had a couple of very enjoyable days in Northumberland but now we're back and, as ever, we'd love to see you and show you all the latest arrivals, so we hope you'll be able to call in soon. In any event, we wish you a wonderful Easter - and remember, there's chocolate about!
