What's new for Autumn at Present Perfect?

Gift Display in autumnal shades

Summer seemed suddenly over thanks to the lingering effects of hurricane Bertha recently but bright, mild, calm weather has returned so, fingers crossed, Autumn will be full of its mellow fruitfulness. And during the summer we've done our best to source beautiful new things, from candles and greetings cards to home decor, to enrich your gift buying for the coming season.

Our faithful friends WoodWick Candles have launched a new range called 'Reserve'. Made with men in mind, they feature chunky, deep-cut glass and a leather tab label. But the woody, spicy fragrances with names such as Driftwood, Oak, Spruce and Canyon will appeal to all those who enjoy warmer scents.

There are also six new fragrances in the classic range including floral, fruity and spicy!

Torc Candles

Once again for the winter season we have this selection from Torc. They are a fabulous buy and the set can be split to provide you with four very attractive gifts. This year, Torc's presentation has been revamped, with new-style box designs, new fragrances and the candle jars now have lids. There is also a giant 4-wick candle in Cinnamon Spice that will make a wonderful centrepiece. Stock is limited so make sure you don't miss out!

The month of September is known to be one of the busiest birthday months of the year! The week beginning 22 Sept. is also designated National 'Thinking of You' Week when we're all encouraged to send a handwritten note to someone special each day. These attractive rollerball pens from Autograph would make either a thoughtful gift or enable you to send your greetings in style! And there are several other designs. Look here to shop online!

And for whatever greetings you wish to send, we have new card ranges in. These are artisan cards featuring the torn paper mosaic designs of Dawn Maciocia and bird designs by Jenny Price of Dandylion Jack. Nature and woodland creatures maintain the current trend.

We also have striking lino cut designs from Jacqui Watkins of Linen Prints, which also celebrate the beauty of nature and several are ideal for the Autumn/Winter season. In addition we have three tea towel and two mug designs which show how versatile Jacqui's designs are!

If you love the shine of silver, the sparkle of crystal or the warm glint of gold, then you'll want to see these bracelets from Equilibrium. Priced from £15.50 to £18.00 they're super stylish and come attractively boxed. The perfect gift or treat for yourself!

We had planned to show you a couple more pieces such as a console table that arrived mid-August and some cute handmade chickens(!) that we were very fortunate to obtain from maker, Annette Mackie but they have already sold! However, we did manage to pop photos on our Facebook page so, if you use it, please give us a 'like' and keep right up-to-date.

There are other new items and even more will be arriving over the coming months so do please pop in and make sure you get to see them before they disappear!

Supporting Independents - Shopping not Politics!

Independent Retailer Month poster

July is the time when we're all encouraged to support our local independent businesses and across the Borders there are lots of distinctive retailers committed to offering something that little bit different. Here at Present Perfect we certainly appreciate the support we receive from our regular customers and we strive always to provide you with quality and value.

We will have a variety of offers dotted through the month. So whenever you can, please shop local - shop independent!

Home & Gift logo

We are also looking forward to our annual H&G visit to source great new stock for the coming season - and it's always nice to spend a day or two in Harrogate! Can't wait to tell you about what we see and buy!

These two charmingly serene characters are Lunas, handcrafted from stoneware clay by Sheena Spacey in her Somerset studio. Their name derives from their moon-shaped faces. The larger figure is Moon Luna (15cm tall, £35) and the other, Nana Luna (12.5cm, £30). Each piece is unique with its own beautifully gentle personality.

'Jack' also arrived recently. He is the third piece we have received from Ros Oliver of DoodleCrafts. She makes each one beautifully and imparts a sense of fun in their character. Jack is made in crushed faux suede with a complementary folk-style material for paw pads and ears. He looks rather dapper in his waistcoat and bow tie!

Here are a few items that are newly listed in our online shop. Pieces are being added regularly, so do please keep popping back to take a look!

If you're taking a holiday this month we hope you have a great time! We send best wishes to our American cousins for their Independence Day weekend. And do please remember to keep Independent Retailers and your other local businesses in mind throughout July! We look forward to seeing you.

It's Festival Time!

Doogie the dragon with titles

It's always good when June comes around because it signals the start of Summer in Melrose! First off is the Borders Book Festival when the town is full of book lovers and some excellent authors: Jennifer Saunders, Lynda La Plante, Paddy Ashdown, Kate Adie and James Naughtie to name just a few. Check out their website for full details.

Sunday 15th may see the book festival end but Melrose Festival week then begins and the town will be festooned with its colours of yellow and black just like Doogie the dragon in our photo! And, of course, we can't forget that it will also be Father's Day, so remember to pick up a treat for your Dad.

Last but not least, you can enjoy some super savings ALL month in our Summer Sale!

Present Perfect shop tree with blossoms

To emphasise the summery feeling, the shop tree has even burst into blossom! And at home we have managed to fill our planters with lovely colours for Summer so that's another good job done!

Sunday 15 June is the time for giving Dads a treat and here are just a few suggestions to show that there's life after socks and ties! From the more traditional cufflinks and wallet, how about some stylish desk accessories, soaps for pampering or even a candle in a masculine 'Tabac' fragrance?

In the shop we have all kinds of great gift ideas in a kaleidoscope of colours, of which this selection of photographs gives just a hint!

And what's even better, we have lots of super bargains available in our Summer Sale. You could save

Selection of gifts in pink colour

£5 when you buy any two candles/reed diffusers priced £14.99 or more. Berkeley Square and

Greenland toiletries are now Half Price and JSK sterling silver jewellery has 20% off! There are also bigger bargains on many of our larger one-off items such as willow baskets, cushions and throws, candle lanterns and wall art.

Finally, even if an individual item has not been specifically reduced, if it costs over *£10 you will receive a 10% discount, so you really can't help saving! (*Excludes a few handcrafted items.)

We hope you will call in to see just what great bargains we have waiting. In the meantime, enjoy the festival season!

Maytime, Playtime!

Well, the month started cold and wet in this neck of the woods but we daresay some brave souls were dancing around a maypole somewhere! As this is also the ancient Celtic festival of Beltane we thought that gives us a good excuse to show you the lovely Celtic knotwork on this sterling silver pendant necklace!

Celtic Knot Heart Pendant

Or how about these knotwork cufflinks, just so the boys don’t feel left out?!

Celtic Knot Cufflinks

Of course, last month not only were we busy with Easter but also with our 7th Birthday/National Stationery Week Competition! We had a very good response with 45 correct entries and it was also amazing to see from how far afield they came. Our winner, Penelope Harper, lives in Southend, and one of the runners-up in Southampton – which just goes to show, good news travels! But it was also nice to have some lucky locals and Ros, the first to collect her prize, was very pleased with her writing paper and notecards. We would like to thank everyone who took part.

Ros Anderson

National Stationery Week meant we had taken delivery of another selection of stylish rollerball pens from Autograph. We’re pleased to say that you can now see these listed in our online shop.

Autograph Pen & Stationery

With our thoughts on warmer, sunnier days (there’s no harm in wishing!) we picked out three fab fragrances from our stock of WoodWick candles which we think are just the thing: cool Green Lotus; clean, fresh Linen; and zesty Lemongrass. Create your own early summer sunshine!

WoodWick Candles

You could also pick up on those fresh colours with these beautiful faux hydrangea flowers. They provide THE finishing touch to this purple ceramic vase. Just one of the purple accessories from notecards to photo frames on display in the window at the moment. Such a rich colour but one that can be used in many combinations.

Faux Hydrangeas

Finally, two bank holidays this month, give the chance to enjoy a day or two away or simply take it easy. That’s where the Maytime, playtime comes in! Whatever you are planning, we hope you have a great time. As ever, we look forward to seeing you.

3 April 2014

Have You Lost it?

National Stationery Week logo
Have you lost the art of letter writing? National Stationery Week is being celebrated right now and we have a variety of notecards, writing paper and quality pens to help you stay in touch and show someone you are thinking of them.
Present Perfect Competition Prizes
Words and writing also star in our 7th birthday competition! There is still time to enter before 12 April and give yourself a chance to win the first prize, worth more than £80, or one of the five runners-up prizes, each worth over £10. Celebrate the words of Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare by visiting our online competition page or call in the shop for an entry form.
Melrose Sevens logo
The second weekend in April sees Melrose rugby club hosting the world famous Sevens competition. Always a major event, Melrose will welcome teams from across the UK and beyond for all day action!
Bunny Bunting
Of course, the following weekend heralds Easter, which could find the more energetic amongst us rolling eggs downhill or perhaps enjoying the slightly more sedate pastime of an Easter egg hunt! Our eggs are all safely arrayed on the shop tree along with some bunny bunting! But if you pop in, you may also find a little chocolate treat waiting!
Peter Pauper Notecards with Melrose Mug
We had thought that Spring had got off to quite a fine start but the last few days have been distinctly damp and grey here in the Borders! Let's hope that there's a dramatic improvement, but remember, you can always bring a ray of sunshine into someone's day with a handwritten note.
We hope to see you soon. In the meantime, thank you for reading this and remember to have a go at our competition. You just might win!
Have a Happy Easter.

4 March 2014

No Mad March Hares Here!

Fair Trade Collage

But it does look like being a busy month! It arrives with Fair Trade Fortnight in full swing having begun on 24 February. We have a small selection of fair trade items to tempt you, both decorative and useful, from shopping bags to table accessories. Made in Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka, the artisans earn a proper return for their creativity and your purchases help to make a difference.

Boy Teddies

At the opposite end of the month, of course, we will be celebrating Mother's Day (30 Mar), although Mums may feel a little short-changed as British Summer Time also begins then, so we lose an hour in bed! A lovely gift, however, will surely make up for it and, as usual, we have a super selection, many of which are also available from our online shop. Feeling in creative mood we've even put together a little filmshow of just a few of the things that Mum would love! You'll find it here. Do take a look and let us know what you think. Steven Spielberg has nothing to worry about!

Present Perfect Competition Prizes

Another exciting piece of news is the launch of our 7th birthday competition! Present Perfect's anniversary happens to coincide with the end of National Stationery Week (31 Mar-6 Apl), plus 2014 also celebrates the 450th anniversaries of two of the greatest writers of the Elizabethan era, Christopher Marlowe (Feb) and William Shakespeare (Apl). So we couldn't miss the opportunity to build a competition around them. We have chosen six quotes from the works of these two men and all you have to do is identify which works they have been taken from - easy! To take part, you can enter online via our Competition Page or pick up an entry form from the shop. Entrants must be aged 16 years or older and be resident in the UK. Closing date is 5 p.m. on Saturday 12 April 2014.
1st Prize (worth over £80) includes the acclaimed novel 'The Marlowe Papers' by Ros Barber; DVD of Shakespeare's Sonnets read by a stellar cast; quality pen set from Autograph; decorated writing paper and a blank journal from Peter Pauper Press plus a pack of our own notecards.
Five Runners-up will each receive a box of writing paper and the notecards (worth over £10).

So if you love literature, reading, writing, stationery, poetry or simply beautiful things - have a go!

.... and talking of stationery we've already received a lovely selection of notecards from Peter Pauper Press. Each box has 14 cards plus 15 envelopes, and at only £5.99 they're great value! Some new journals too.

Valentine Quote

Also just wanted to let you know that we held a ‘flash giveaway’ for Valentine’s Day over on our Facebook page. We asked people to identify the person who wrote the phrase in the photograph above. The answer was, of course, Christopher Marlowe and the prize was the sterling silver pendant shown, complete with chain. The lucky winner was Eleanor! If you use Facebook we’d love you to become a ‘liker’. See you over there!

At this rate, it will be Easter before we know it! Better start thinking what we can hang on the shop’s tree to mark everything that's happening! We hope you will call in - and you can always offer suggestions! Take care.

Back from Africa!

Elephant Trio in Kruger Park, South Africa

Isn't it an endearing sight? We saw lots of elephants and many more animals during our time in the Kruger Park, South Africa. The highlight was a leopard lying along a tree bough, a very rare sighting during daytime! We also had a very enjoyable week in guest lodges before entering the park. At the Blyde River Canyon Lodge, zebras approached the terrace during dinner on our first evening. South Africa is a beautiful country and offers so many wonderful sights, be they landscapes, wild life or weather. We had a couple of terrific thunderstorms - very atmospheric but WARM! We had not visited for ten years and it was great to be back!

Heart Clock in Cornish slate by Driftmoods

We have now had just one week back in the shop and, of course, Valentine's Day is on the horizon. Many customers admired our 'Christmas tree' and urged us to keep it for other occasions, so it is now bedecked with lots of heart decorations plus some birdies and owls to provide fun little tokens of love! Do call in to see it. Naturally, we have plenty of other gifts if you should like to demonstrate your affection in a slightly different fashion, such as this handmade Cornish slate clock – why not blend romantic with practical?! Remember too that the hearts and some jewellery pieces are available from our online shop.

Wicker chair at sale price

At the end of last year we managed to have a one day sale before our impending holiday. Well, we're pleased to say that some items are still at their sale prices, so it's still possible to make good savings on a table lamp or home decor item as well as on some smaller gifts - great to bear in mind for Mother's Day or any upcoming birthdays etc. Makes sense to get them while the going's good!

Trade magazines and Brochures

Spring always brings a flurry of trade magazines and brochures from suppliers and we're as eager as you to know what the new season has in store! Over the next couple of months we hope to have a variety of new stock coming in as we plan to visit some of our suppliers direct and place orders. So do keep calling in to see what may have arrived.

Blyde River Canyon, South Africa

We'll leave you with one more glimpse of South Africa and the stunning scenery of the Blyde River Canyon.

See you soon!
