Countdown to Christmas at Present Perfect!

PP Christmas Tree

Have you begun opening the first windows on your Advent calendar? With any luck chocolate will be accompanying breakfast for the next few weeks - we're never too old for that! As you can see, the shop is all trimmed up. This year we decided to take a natural branch, kindly provided by friends, (they know who they are!) and we are thrilled by the kind comments of those customers who have already seen it. All the decorations are for sale, including cute tin owls and some handmade rectangular glass icicles, each one unique!

Trapp Christmas Candles

Once again, we have these wonderful quality Trapp candles from America. There is "a bottle of perfume in every candle" and they will fill your home with festive fragrance.

Glass Candlestick & Hurricane

These two pieces from Parlane will make a big impact in your decor. The mercury glass 'Majestic' candlestick and the hurricane lamp both have an antique gold colour finish. We also have many other candle related holders in various shapes, colours and sizes.

Barry Cooper Glass

This selection of glass items is handmade by Barry Cooper. We particularly like the 'Blue Aluminium' dish with its dichroic glass and also have one with green insets. The little heart hanging plaques are fun and we have a few greetings cards that are mounted with a small glass heart square.

Pashmina5

This beautifully colourful pashmina is made in Kashmir from 50% wool/silk. We have four variations, any of which could help provide the finishing touch to a winter outfit. Also available online.

Snowman Family Tea Towel

If you're hoping to enlist help with the dishes over the party season, make it more fun with one of our festive tea towels! We have this cute snowman family and two other equally colourful designs. At only £3.75 each you could give one to every member of the family! Winking smile

We are now just a week away from the UK's first Small Business Saturday event. We will have Christmas nibbles on offer and there will be *free gifts (votives, candle tins and reed diffusers) for customers who spend £5, £25 or £50. The day is also supported by American Express and their cardholders can get a credit on their statement if they make a £10 purchase in any participating business! We hope to see you.
* While stocks last.

Finally, please remember that during December we are open 7 days a week until Christmas Eve: Sundays & Mondays 12 noon - 4 p.m. and Tuesdays to Saturdays 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. We hope you will enjoy all that the holiday season has to offer.

September at Present Perfect

Autumn in Glen Livet

Hello and welcome to our September newsletter.

Last month we told you about our new online shop. Since then we have been adding more items (a continuing process!) and are thrilled also to have made some sales including a lovely piece of handmade jewellery by Jules & Fiona.

Do take a look (click link above) and let us know any thoughts or comments you may have. We would love to have your feedback. Please also remember that we can provide gift wrapping and send gifts direct to your family and friends, a facility that may be very useful now that Christmas is on the horizon! And you can shop safe in the knowledge that your payments are being handled securely by Paypal - you don’t need an account and can simply use your credit/debit card as usual.

Remember too that you can keep up with our daily doings by liking us on Facebook. Speaking of which, during August we had a little competition on FB and asked our ‘likers’ if they could identify the location of a photograph that we had adapted for one of our own notecards. The answer was the Roxburghe cloister at Kelso Abbey. Mrs Allen was the lucky winner and received a set of our newest five notecard designs!

Blue-Beige Pillar Capital

The WoodWick candle we have selected for September is ‘Citrus Melon’. So you can enjoy a saving of 20% and keep summer going just that little bit longer! (while stocks last)

New stock has been arriving from Joe Davies, Parlane and Wax Lyrical with more on the way - including things with a distinctly festive feel!

Floral Shadow T-lights

Also from Parlane, have you seen these fun ‘hare’ design tea towels, mug and even an apron? Be ‘on trend’ and bring a little bit of nature into your kitchen. We have a squirrel design too!

Beautiful pashminas in 50% silk/wool will make ideal accessories as the cooler weather approaches. £18.99

We are thrilled to have been featured in Small Business Saturday UK’s 100 businesses in the build up to the campaign event on Sat. 7th December. This is an initiative, which is taking place in the UK for the first time, to encourage everyone to support their small local independent businesses. That first Saturday in December is reckoned to be one of the busiest shopping days in the year and lots will be happening then but the principle applies all year round. We’ll give you more news nearer the time!

Present Perfect Interior

We hope you have had an enjoyable summer and have been able to take advantage of the super weather that seems to be lingering on. But already there’s a perceptible shortening of the days, so let’s hope for a glorious autumn. As always, we look forward to seeing you!

Two ways to shop with Present Perfect!

We are thrilled to announce that we now have our domain name linked directly to our new online shop which we've begun stocking with a selection of the things we sell at Present Perfect.

It has taken us quite a while to reach this point but there seems little doubt that online shopping continues to grow so it makes sense to offer you the choice and provide an alternative to the large stores. So if you live a little further away from Melrose, you can still have the pleasure of shopping with us, whether for yourself or perhaps to send a gift to family or friends.
The screen shot above shows just a few of the things that are already available but we'll be adding more all the time. You can visit our online shop to get a better look. We would love to hear any comments/feedback you might have. We hope you like it!

Of course, not all of the things that we sell at 1 Scott's Place are suitable or appropriate for selling online but we will include as much as possible of our regular stock.  Our online shop is hosted on the 'Supadupa' e-commerce platform and payments are processed by Paypal which means you can shop safe in the knowledge that your transactions are being handled securely - and you don't need a Paypal account, you can simply use your credit/debit card as usual.

In mid-July we attended the Home & Gift trade fair in Harrogate. (The weather was great and we had an enjoyable time even managing to fit in a visit to Harewood House where it was lovely to see the state rooms.) As usual we placed an order for WoodWick candles and were astonished when they were delivered just three days later including some Christmas fragrances - but don't worry, 'those' aren't on display yet! But we do have some very nice new scents for summer like those above, plus we have selected 'Soft Cashmere' as the candle offer for August and you can SAVE 20% making it only £12.80. (Subject to availability.)

We also have an offer with Trapp reed diffusers and you will receive a FREE votive candle in their soft and refreshing 'Water' fragrance with each purchase - again, while stocks last. The diffusers come beautifully boxed with an extra large 237ml bottle of fragrance, a frosted container and two sets of reeds.

If you are looking for something that sparkles and shines, we have a selection of suitable candidates! Then again .....

if you prefer the beauty of natural wood, we have some of that too - and lots of other things besides!

How do you like our new mini business cards from Moo.com? They're colourful and fun and every picture tells a different story. We're looking forward to giving them out! Please remember that we are also on Facebook and you can always keep up to date by 'liking' us over there or you can follow our blog here. But do please keep checking back to our website to see what we have been adding to the online shop. We hope to see you soon.

Celebrate Your Independents!

Indie Retailer Month
July is Independent Retailer Month when we are all encouraged to support small, local independent businesses to help keep our town/village centres alive. The downturn in the economy continues to make life difficult for many small businesses but we can all help to reverse the situation by doing more of our shopping locally rather than online or in out-of-town centres. And it’s worth remembering that for every £1 spent locally around 50p – 70p circulates back into the local economy compared to only about 5p if it’s spent online or out of town.
Handmade & Silver Jewellery
Present Perfect will be doing its bit by making various offers throughout July! You can SAVE 20% on any of our handmade or solid silver jewellery. This includes pieces by Jules Jules, Jules + Fiona, JSK and Fiona Gurney. Prices start from £12.
Candles & Diffusers
Or SAVE £5 when you buy any two candles/reed diffusers priced £14.99 or more. Make your choice from the fabulous fragrances offered by WoodWick, Trapp, M&Sense and Fired Earth.
In addition, there will be a variety of ad hoc offers dotted through the month such as ‘Buy four greetings cards and get a fifth one FREE’ or ‘Buy a mug and get a second one for half price’ etc. So there will be plenty of opportunities to make savings!
*In each case the cheapest item will be given free or discounted and all offers are subject to availability.
We look forward to seeing you soon. Remember to bring your loyalty card or pick one up if you haven’t already. Why not ‘like’ us on Facebook to see regular updates?

Festival Time in Melrose

Melrose in June means two things: the Brewin Dolphin Borders Book Festival (13-16th), swiftly followed by Melrose Festival Week (16th-22nd), both of which offer colour, excitement and entertainment!

Melrose High Street

The book festival brings all manner of bibliophiles and the glitteriest of literati to town, while the Melrose festival gives the community the chance to celebrate all that’s good about the town’s traditions. Now, if we could cling on to the wonderful sunshine that we’ve been enjoying recently, all would be well with the world!

Commissioned craftwork pieces

For our part, we’ve been having a great time commissioning a selection of items with a distinctly Melrose flavour for our festival window display to add to the other wonderful handcrafted pieces that we already sell. So we’re thrilled to have mischievous miniature ‘meeces’ from Quernus Crafts - Daisy the cow and Doogie the dragon from DoodleCrafts – mosaic blackbirds and jewellery from Box of Frogs Mosaics and Melrose hearts from Heart of the Borders!

Handcrafted items

Joining them will be paintings by Borders artist, Shona Lenaghan – clocks and barometers in beautiful hand-turned wood by David White Eildon Bears from Suzanne Kirk – glass blackbirds and hearts by Jessica Stroud of Greengage Glass and handmade soaps/bath truffles from Ceri at Oakwood Soaperie and Jill at Planet Soap. So you see, there will be plenty of talent on display!

Melrose Mugs

Of course, we couldn’t forget our very own Melrose mugs, so here’s to the festivals – cheers!

We have all sorts of new stock and hope you’ll be able to call in to see it soon. In the meantime, enjoy the sunshine!

Love and Spring Fair

Happy Valentines' Day! It's always a pleasure to receive a little token of love from a special someone no matter how modest the gift may be, such as these fragrant tealights from Parlane. We hope love manifests itself in many ways for you today!

At the beginning of February we made our annual pilgrimage to the Spring Fair in Birmingham to see what the new season has to offer. It's always an adventure but can also be pretty exhausting covering the acres of halls! As ever, we saw lots of great gift ideas and placed orders with several of our current suppliers plus a few new ones. Some new stock has already arrived with more to follow and we hope you'll like what you see. The photograph above includes new jewellery from Equilibrium, ladies lightweight scarf, cosmetic purse and a trio of votive candles, all new in. Also featured are soaps from Heyland & Whittle, handcream from Berkeley Square Cosmetics, a small creamware dish and a sterling silver pendant from JSK Jewellery.

New pens have arrived from Autograph. We have an attractive mix of ballpoints and rollerball pens, of which these are just three, all appropriately boxed and ranging in price from £10 to £30. We also have a selection of gents cuff links and keys rings too.

A few new pieces of furniture from Pacific Lifestyle have also helped to give the shop layout a new look. This mango wood wall unit and triangular table are in 'vintage sand' colour and can be ordered in other finishes.

or how about this traditional wicker chair which always makes a handy extra seat anywhere in the home?

Arriving any day now is this beautiful new candle range from Wax Lyrical (based in the Lake District) in collaboration with Fired Earth. The five tea fragrances are based on Fired Earth paint colours with names such as Chamomile & Violet and Red Emperor Tea. The range also includes reed diffusers.

With plenty to spike your interest we hope you'll be able to call into the shop soon and we look forward to seeing you.

19 January 2013

Well, despite the recent falls of snow, January is progressing apace. At Present Perfect the SALE is still on with ALL regular stock at 10% off and selected items with up to 50% off, so there are plenty of savings to be had on some great gifts! We look forward to seeing you soon.
